The complete guide to a clean, professional plastic border

Whether you are a homeowner, a landscaper or a designer, plastic edging is usually where a border project starts. It is the cheapest way to get a permanent line, it bends around curves by hand, and it will not rust. This is how to choose it, plan it and fit it so it still looks right in five years.

What plastic landscape edging is

A continuous flexible strip that sits vertically in the ground between two areas, held down by spikes driven through tabs along its base. The top sits slightly proud of the soil so grass roots cannot cross over it and the mower can ride over the top.

Why plastic is the most used material

It costs less per metre than steel, it weighs almost nothing to handle, it curves without any tools, and damp does not touch it. Ours is made from recycled plastic, which is worth knowing if the job has a sustainability requirement attached to it.

The types we stock

Standard strip edging

The flexible kit: a plain strip with a rounded bead along the top, supplied per metre in a 5 cm or 10 cm face height, with spiral spikes. This is the everyday answer for lawn to bed borders.

Per piece bed borders

Stone effect sections in recycled PP, 24 cm each, that interlock into a run. They suit tight curves and tree rings, where a continuous strip is harder to work with.

Pound in edging with spikes

Both of ours are pound in: the spikes go through the tabs and into the ground with a rubber mallet, so there is no separate anchoring system to buy.

We do not stock decorative scalloped or stone effect plastic. If that is the look you are after, this is not the shop for it.

What a plastic border actually does

Stops grass invading

Grass spreads by runners at or just under the surface. A continuous vertical barrier is what stops them, which is why gaps and shallow installations fail.

Holds mulch and gravel in place

Loose material moves in heavy rain. The border is the only thing between your mulch and your lawn.

Gives you a mowing line

Set correctly, you mow straight over it. That removes most of the strimming from the job.

Lasts without upkeep

There is nothing to paint, oil or treat. An annual walk round to tap back frost lifted spikes is the whole maintenance schedule.

Planning the layout

Marking the line

Lay a hose or a rope along the route and stand back and look at it before you cut anything. Gentle curves look deliberate; tight wobbles look like a mistake. Adjust the hose until it looks right, then mark the line.

Working out how many metres

Measure along the marked line following every curve, not the straight distance across the bed. A curved bed can need noticeably more edging than its footprint suggests. Add a little for cuts.

Choosing the face height

5 cm is enough to separate a lawn from a flat bed. Go to 10 cm where there is a mulch depth, a gravel area or a level change to hold back.

Fitting it, step by step

Cut the trench

Cut a clean vertical line with a square spade along your marked route, then take out a narrow trench deep enough that the top of the edging will sit about 50 mm above soil level. Most failures start here: too shallow, and the edging lifts.

Seat the edging

Set the strip against the vertical face of the trench, with the bead uppermost. Work along the run and keep it tight to the cut face rather than floating in the middle of the trench.

Drive the spikes

Spikes go through the tabs with a rubber mallet. Roughly every 1.2 m along straight runs, and closer, around every 300 mm, on curves, because a curve is constantly trying to straighten itself.

Backfill and firm

Push the excavated soil back against both sides and firm it down with your heel. The soil is what holds the line as much as the spikes are.

Joining lengths

Butt the ends together tightly and spike either side of the join. A gap at a join is an open door for grass.

The mistakes people make

Installing it too shallow

Frost and root pressure push shallow edging out of the ground within a season. Depth is not the place to save time.

Not enough spikes on the curves

The most common failure. A curve pegged at straight run spacing gradually pulls itself flat.

Leaving gaps at the joins

Grass will find any gap you leave. Butt the sections and spike them.

Keeping it right

Check it each spring

Walk the run after the winter and tap back anything that has lifted.

Keep the top edge clear

Soil and clippings build up over the bead until the line disappears and the mower starts catching it. Clear it back.

Sunlight and age

Plastic in full sun eventually fades and stiffens. It is honest to say so. Replace individual damaged sections as they go rather than waiting for the whole run to look tired.
