Choosing and fitting a landscape border that holds its line
Whether you are a homeowner, a landscaper or a designer, the edging decides whether a garden reads as designed or just planted. This page covers what we stock, how the materials differ, and how to fit them properly.
Our range is the simple end of landscape borders: strips that separate lawn from bed in corten weathering steel, stainless steel, black steel or black recycled plastic. No stone, no timber, no concrete.
Which material does what
The subtlest borders are 50 mm to 100 mm deep strips of steel or plastic. Metal bends into smooth curves and stops grass roots crossing. Steel almost disappears against grass and soil, which is exactly why designers reach for it. The plastic kit carries a rounded black bead along the top edge, so it reads as a visible line rather than an invisible one.
Corten is the one people ask about most. It is meant to rust: the surface weathers to an orange brown patina and then stabilises, and that finish is the point.
All of these work best on reasonably even ground. If your site dips and rises a lot, a paver or brick border copes better than a continuous strip.
Setting the height
Set the top edge about 50 mm above soil level. That keeps the lawn and bed apart, stops roots crossing over the top, and still lets you mow straight over it. Bear in mind that a thin metal edge sits at ankle height in a lawn, so round off any cut ends with a file.
Getting the line right
The trick is a clean vertical edge. Cut along the grass with a square spade first, then lay the edging tight against that cut face before you peg and backfill. There is no rule about shape: follow the lawn and keep the curves gradual. For a tight, even curve, bend metal edging around something circular rather than trying to eye it.
Heavier sections survive the knocks that come with mowing. If the run is next to a lawn you cut every week, the thicker option is worth the difference.
Buying landscape edging online
Steel edging is the common choice for professionals and the least common thing to find in a local nursery, which is why most of it is bought from specialists. It is heavy and it flexes, so it wants full support when it is moved, and we pack it accordingly.
Plastic edging is available everywhere, in thin and heavy duty versions. Buy the thicker one. The thin strip is the one that buckles when a mower wheel rides up on it.
We sell the per metre ranges cut to the length you order with no minimum, so you buy the run you measured. Delivery is free across Europe on orders over €60 and otherwise a flat €22.
What landscape edging is for
Defining garden beds
A hard line between bed and lawn keeps grass runners out of the planting and keeps soil in the bed where it belongs.
Outlining pathways
Edging along a path stops gravel and mulch migrating onto the grass, and gives the mower something to follow.
Framing features
Tree circles, specimen shrubs and gravel areas all read better with a deliberate outline.
Containing mulch and gravel
This is where face height matters. The deeper the strip, the more loose material it holds back in heavy rain.
Looking after it
Keep the top edge clear of soil and overgrowth so the line stays visible and the mower can still ride over it. Walk the run once a year, tap back anything frost has lifted, and replace damaged sections rather than leaving a gap, because a gap is where grass gets back in.
