Corten is the edging people have usually seen in a magazine and then come looking for.
It is weathering steel: an alloy developed so the surface forms a stable oxide layer that protects the metal underneath, which means it never needs painting.
The finish is an orange brown that deepens over the first year and then settles. Against green planting it is the reason the material gets specified.
Ours is supplied already weathered, so it looks right from the day it goes in rather than after a winter of raw steel.

Weathering steel was developed to remove the need for painting. The alloy is formulated so that the first layer of rust is dense and tightly bonded, and once it has formed it slows further corrosion rather than accelerating it the way ordinary rust does on mild steel.
In a garden that means an edging you install and then genuinely forget. There is nothing to paint, nothing to seal and nothing to service.
The look is the reason most people buy it. Orange brown against green foliage is a combination that reads as deliberate in a way that a black or bright edge does not, and it gets more convincing as the planting fills in around it.
Two practical points worth knowing before you buy. First, while the patina is forming, run off can stain pale paving, render or decking next to it, so think about what sits below the edging. Second, the finish is not uniform: variation across sections is normal and is part of the material rather than a defect.
At 1.5 mm it is the stiffest thing in the range. That makes it excellent at holding a line and less willing to take a tight curve than the thinner stainless.

What corten actually is
Corten is a trade name that became a generic one. The material is weathering steel: a group of steel alloys developed so that the surface rust layer is dense and tightly bonded rather than flaky. Once that layer has formed it slows further corrosion instead of feeding it, which is why the material was originally used on bridges and buildings that nobody wanted to repaint.
In a garden the practical effect is an edging with no maintenance schedule at all.
What it looks like over time
Ours arrives already weathered, so it goes in looking like corten rather than looking like raw steel that you have to take on trust.
Over the first year the colour deepens and evens out. After that it is stable. Expect variation between sections and across a single length: the patina responds to how water sits and drains on the surface, and that unevenness is the character people are buying.
The one thing to plan for
While the patina is forming, rain washes a small amount of iron oxide off the surface. On soil and planting that is invisible. On pale limestone paving, white render or new decking it can leave orange marks.
So look at what sits immediately below and downhill of the run before you commit. Next to a lawn or a planted bed there is nothing to worry about. Against pale paving, either accept the mark, set the edging back, or choose black or stainless steel instead.
Fitting it
Corten at 1.5 mm is the stiffest edging we sell. That is good for holding a straight run dead straight and less good for tight curves, so keep the radius generous and form it around something circular rather than by eye.
Cut a clean vertical spade line, seat the first section against it, then overlap the next by the 75 mm interlock. Work along the run keeping the top edge at a consistent height, drive the spikes, then backfill and firm the soil against both sides.
Wear gloves. Weathered steel is rough on the hands and a cut end is sharp.
Do not paint it
It sounds obvious once you know what the material does, but people do ask. Painting or sealing corten prevents the weathering process that protects the steel underneath, which leaves you with a coated mild steel that will fail where the coating chips. If you want a painted finish, buy the black steel edging, which is made for exactly that.
