About this product
The cheapest permanent way to stop grass getting into your beds.
Flexible recycled plastic edging that bends to your curves by hand and pegs in with a mallet. Cut to the metre, no minimum order.
This is the product most people start with, and for a straightforward lawn to bed border it is usually the right answer.
It is a flexible strip of recycled plastic with a rounded bead along the top and tabs along the bottom that the spikes pass through.
You cut a vertical line with a spade, seat the strip against it, drive the spikes in with a mallet and firm the soil back. No trench, no concrete, no specialist tools.
Because it bends by hand it follows curves that a rigid border cannot, which is what makes a bed look designed rather than boxed in.
Three spikes per metre are included in every order.
Grass spreads sideways by runners just under the surface, which is why a bed that was crisp in spring has soft, blurred edges by August. Mowing and strimming treat the symptom. A physical barrier in the ground is what actually stops it.
Plastic edging is the cheapest way to put that barrier in. It costs a fraction of steel per metre, it weighs almost nothing to carry round the garden, and one person can lay a long run in an afternoon without hiring anything.
The flexibility is the other reason to choose it. Beds are rarely straight, and a strip you can bend by hand follows a curve exactly, with no joins and no gaps for grass to come through. Long spiral spikes hold the shape and resist the frost heave that pushes cheaper edging back out of the ground over a winter.
It also works in any soil. Clay, sand, stony ground, it makes no difference to plastic, and damp does not touch it the way it works on untreated steel.
Being straight about the trade off: plastic in full sun fades and stiffens over the years, and a mower wheel riding up on the bead will eventually mark it. If you want an edge that stays invisible and lasts decades, buy steel. If you want a permanent line at the lowest cost per metre, this is it.

How is it sold?
By the running metre, cut to the length you order. There is no minimum, so a seven metre bed costs seven metres.
Which face height should I choose?
5 cm is enough to keep grass out of a flat bed. Choose 10 cm if there is a mulch layer, a gravel area or a change of level for the edging to hold back.
Are the spikes included?
Yes. Three spiral spikes come with every metre. Spare pegs are sold separately if the ground is stony and you expect to lose a few.
Do I need to dig a trench?
Not a full trench. A clean vertical line cut with a square spade is enough, taking out just enough soil that the top finishes about 50 mm above soil level.
How far apart should the spikes go?
Roughly every 1.2 m on straight runs and every 300 mm through curves. Curves need the closer spacing because the strip is constantly trying to straighten itself.
Can I bend it around a curve?
Yes, by hand, as you lay it. No heat, no forming tool and no lead time. That is the main reason to choose a flexible strip over a rigid border.
Will it rust?
No. It is plastic, so corrosion is not a factor in any soil or weather.
Can I mow over it?
That is the idea. Set with the top about 50 mm above soil level, a mower rides straight over the bead and you stop hand trimming the edge.
How long will it last?
Many years in ordinary conditions. Being straight about it: plastic in full sun eventually fades and stiffens, and a mower wheel riding up on the bead will mark it over time. Steel lasts longer and costs more.
Will frost push it out of the ground?
It can if the installation is too shallow, which is the main reason to get the depth right. The spiral spikes are designed to resist heave. A spring check to tap back anything that has lifted takes a few minutes.
Can I use it in clay or stony soil?
Yes. Plastic does not care about soil type. Stony ground is harder to drive spikes into, so allow for a few bent ones and consider ordering spare pegs.
Can it hold back gravel?
The 10 cm face will hold a shallow gravel area. For a deep gravel bed or a path with constant pressure against the strip, steel is the better answer.
How do I join two lengths?
Butt the ends tightly together and put a spike either side of the join. Do not leave a gap: that is where grass gets back through.
Can I cut it myself?
Yes, with garden shears or a sharp knife. We cut to your ordered length, but trimming the last piece on site is straightforward.
What tools do I need?
A square spade to cut the line and a rubber mallet for the spikes. Gloves and a kneeling pad make the job a lot less unpleasant, and we sell both.
Can it be lifted and reused?
Usually yes, if you lift the spikes carefully rather than pulling the strip out by hand. The spikes themselves are the part that tends to bend.
Does it stop weeds as well as grass?
It stops grass spreading in by runners, which is the main problem. It cannot stop seed blowing into the bed from above, so it reduces weeding rather than ending it.
Is it safe around children and pets?
The top edge is a rounded bead rather than a sharp lip, which is one advantage it has over thin metal edging in a garden that gets used barefoot.
What colour is it?
Black. It reads as a defined line against grass rather than disappearing, which is the visual difference between plastic and steel edging.
How much does a metre weigh?
Around 0.4 kg per metre, so even a long run is easy to carry and position on your own.
Can I install it on a slope?
Yes, and it follows gentle level changes well. Sharp dips and rises are where a continuous strip struggles and a paver border does better.
How long does installation take?
Most people manage 10 to 15 metres in an hour once the line is marked and the spade cut is done. Cutting the line is the slow part.

Is it suitable for a vegetable bed?
Yes, and it is a common use. It keeps grass out of the beds and gives you a clean line to mow to between them.
Can I use it for a tree circle?
Yes. Tight circles are exactly where a flexible strip beats a rigid border, and the spike spacing wants to be closer all the way round.
How does it compare with the corrugated metal edging?
Plastic is cheaper, lighter and easier to fit on your own. The corrugated metal has a textured, agricultural look and more stiffness. They are different finishes rather than better and worse.

What you are buying
A flexible strip of recycled black plastic, supplied by the metre and cut to the length you order. It has a rounded bead along the top edge and flat tabs along the bottom. The spikes go through those tabs and into the ground, and the soil you backfill holds the rest.
Two face heights. The 5 cm keeps grass out of a flat bed and is what most gardens need. The 10 cm has more depth in the ground and more above it, which is what you want if there is a mulch layer, a gravel area or a change of level to hold back.
Working out how many metres
Measure along the line the edging will actually follow, going round every curve, rather than straight across the bed. Those two numbers are different and the straight one is always short. A hose laid along the route and then measured is the easiest way to do it.
Add a little for cuts. Then order that many metres: we cut to your length and there is no minimum.
Fitting it
Start by marking the line with a hose or sand and standing back to look at it. Gentle curves read as deliberate, tight wobbles read as a mistake, and this is the only free moment to change your mind.
Cut a clean vertical edge along the line with a square spade. This step is what makes the difference between edging that sits tight and edging that leans. Take out just enough soil that the top of the strip will finish about 50 mm above soil level.
Seat the strip against the cut face with the bead uppermost, working along the run rather than trying to place the whole length at once. Drive a spike through a base tab with the rubber mallet roughly every 1.2 m along straight runs, and every 300 mm through curves. A curve is permanently trying to straighten itself, and under pegging one is the most common reason a run pulls flat over a season.
Where two lengths meet, butt the ends tightly together and put a spike either side of the join. A gap at a join is exactly where grass gets back through.
Finish by pushing the soil back against both sides and firming it down with your heel.
Keeping it right
Walk the run each spring and tap back anything the frost has lifted. Keep soil and clippings off the top bead, because once the line is buried the mower starts catching it. Replace a damaged section rather than leaving a gap.
When to buy something else
If your ground dips and rises sharply, a paver or brick border copes better than any continuous strip. If you want the edge to be invisible, buy black or stainless steel. If the bed is a design feature, corten is the finish people are usually picturing.
