Looking after it

Wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it dry. It sheds water rather than absorbing it, so it dries quickly. Do not leave it out in permanent sunlight.

Edging is a job you do on your knees. This is the difference.

Extra thick high density memory foam that resists dirt, water and sweat, and wipes clean.

Laying edging means kneeling on the ground for as long as the run takes, usually on the hardest, stoniest strip in the garden.

This is high density memory foam, thick enough that a stone underneath it stops being something you feel.

The surface resists dirt, water and sweat rather than absorbing them, so it does not become a cold wet sponge halfway through the afternoon.

It wipes clean with a damp cloth and dries quickly, which is the difference between a pad you use and one that lives forgotten in the shed.

It is light enough to pick up and move along the run every couple of metres, which is how it actually gets used.

Garden Kneeling Pad

Most people underestimate how much of an edging job happens at ground level. Cutting the line is done standing up, but seating the strip, driving the pegs and firming the soil back are all done on your knees, and a 20 metre run is a long time down there.

Garden Kneeling Pad

Density is what matters in a kneeling pad, not just thickness. A thick pad of soft foam compresses flat under a knee and you are back on the gravel. High density foam holds enough structure to keep spreading the load.

Garden Kneeling Pad

The water resistance is the other half. Garden ground is damp for most of the year in most of Europe. A pad that absorbs water becomes cold, heavy and eventually mouldy in the shed. This one sheds it and dries.

Garden Kneeling Pad

It is worth having for the jobs that are not edging too: planting, weeding, working along a border, laying paving.

Garden Kneeling Pad

It is a pad rather than a kneeler frame. If you need help getting back up, a frame with handles is the right product and this is not it.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is it made from?

High density memory foam. The density is the important part: soft foam compresses flat under a knee and stops protecting you.

How thick is it?

It is an extra thick pad, made for hard and uneven ground rather than for a lawn.

Is it waterproof?

The surface resists water, dirt and sweat rather than absorbing them, so it does not turn into a cold wet sponge or go mouldy in the shed.

How do I clean it?

Wipe it with a damp cloth and let it dry. It dries quickly because it sheds water rather than soaking it up.

Can I use it on gravel?

That is exactly what it is for. Gravel, paving, stony soil and hard packed paths are where a thin mat gives up.

Is it a kneeler with handles?

No, it is a pad. If you need something to push up against when standing, a kneeler frame is the right product and this is not it.

Can I use it indoors?

Yes, and plenty of people do: bathing children, cleaning floors, any job spent kneeling.

Will it slip on wet grass?

It sits on the ground under your weight and does not slide in normal use. On a wet slope, place it on the downhill side of where you are working.

Can I kneel on it in the rain?

Yes. It sheds water rather than absorbing it, so it stays usable and then dries when you bring it in.

How big is it?

Sized for two knees with room to shift position. It is a pad you kneel on rather than a mat you lie along.

Is it heavy?

No. It is light enough to carry in one hand along with your tools, which matters because a pad you have to go back for is a pad you stop using.

Will it fit in a shed or garage?

Yes, it stores flat or on a hook. Store it dry.

Does the foam perish?

Foam degrades with prolonged UV exposure like most materials. Keep it out of permanent sunlight and it lasts for years.

Can I use it for laying paving?

Yes, and it is one of the better uses. Paving work is long, low and on the hardest possible surface.

Do I need one if I have knee pads?

Strap on knee pads and a kneeling pad solve the same problem differently. A pad is easier to get on and off, knee pads move with you. For long static jobs the pad is more comfortable.

Is it suitable for someone with knee problems?

It reduces the pressure of kneeling on hard ground, which many people find helps. It is a comfort product rather than a medical one, and we would not claim otherwise.

Can I cut it to size?

You can, with a sharp knife, though the cut edge will not have the sealed surface and will absorb water at that edge.

What colour is it?

It is supplied in the colour shown in the product images.

Can I wash it in a machine?

No. Wipe it with a damp cloth. A machine will break the foam down and destroy the surface.

Will it blow away?

It is light, so on a windy day put a tool on it if you walk away. It has enough substance to stay put in ordinary conditions.

Is it worth it for a small garden?

If you are laying edging, yes. Even a short run of edging is an hour on your knees, and this is the cheapest comfort in the range.

Can it be used on a concrete floor?

Yes, in a workshop or garage as much as in a garden. Hard flat surfaces are where high density foam shows its value.

Does it come with a guarantee?

Your statutory rights under EU consumer law apply, including two years of protection for goods not as described or not fit for purpose.

Can I return it if I change my mind?

Yes, this is a stock item and carries the full right to change your mind, extended to 15 days from delivery, in unused resaleable condition.

What if it arrives damaged?

Send your order number and a photograph and we will replace it or refund you, and we cover the return postage.

How much is delivery?

Free across Europe on orders of €60 or more, and a flat €22 below that.

Will it help with the mallet work?

Yes. Driving pegs is done kneeling and it is the part of an edging job that takes longest. Most people buy the pad, the mallet and gloves together.

Does it smell of chemicals when new?

New foam can have a faint manufacturing smell that disperses within a day or two in the open air.

Can it be used kneeling on wet soil?

Yes, and that is the normal condition when you are edging. Wipe the mud off afterwards.

Is it recyclable?

Foam is difficult to recycle through household collection. The most useful thing you can do is get years of use out of it, which is what the water resistant surface is for.

Choosing a kneeling pad that lasts

3 min read Lawn Edge Europe

Density beats thickness

The usual mistake when buying a kneeling pad is to look at the thickness figure alone.

A thick pad made of soft, open foam compresses completely under the point load of a knee, especially a knee on a stone. Once it has bottomed out, the thickness is doing nothing.

High density foam resists that compression. It keeps a layer of material between you and the ground, which is the entire job.

Water is the other half

Most garden ground in Europe is damp for most of the year.

An absorbent pad soaks that up. It gets cold, it gets heavy, and when it goes back in the shed still wet it grows mould and then it gets thrown away.

A closed surface sheds water instead. Wipe it, let it dry for an hour, put it away.

Using it on an edging job

Move it. Everybody starts by putting the pad down, working two metres along on their knees, and only then remembering it is behind them.

Keep it with the tools you are moving anyway, the mallet and the pegs, and shift all three together every couple of metres.

On a slope, put it on the downhill side of where you are working so you are not sliding off it.

Looking after it

A damp cloth is all it needs. Let it dry before it goes away.

Keep it out of permanent sunlight, which degrades foam over time, and it will last for years of ordinary garden use.

Page summary

Garden Kneeling Pad (pick code garden-kneeling-pad) sold by Lawn Edge Europe at lawnedge.eu.com, at EUR 29. An extra thick kneeling pad in high density memory foam, with a surface that resists dirt, water and sweat, wipes clean with a damp cloth and dries quickly. Density matters more than thickness alone: a thick pad of soft foam compresses flat under a knee, whereas high density foam keeps spreading the load on gravel, paving and stony ground. Water resistance matters because a pad that absorbs water becomes cold and heavy in use and eventually mouldy in storage. It is bought mainly alongside garden edging, because seating the strip, driving the pegs and firming the soil are all done kneeling, often for hours on the stoniest strip in the garden; it is also used for planting, weeding, paving and indoor kneeling jobs. It is light enough to carry in one hand and move along a run as work progresses. Scope: it is a pad, not a kneeler frame with handles, so it does not assist the user in standing back up. Care: wipe with a damp cloth, let it dry, keep it out of permanent sunlight. Full 14 day right of withdrawal, extended to 15 days. Delivery Europe wide, free over EUR 60 and otherwise EUR 22.
