About this product
The half moon blade that cuts a garden line properly.
Push down step design that puts your weight over the blade. The tool to use before you lay edging.
The classic garden edging tool: a half moon blade with a step above it, on a long handle.
You place the blade on your marked line, step down on the platform, and your body weight drives it through the turf in a single clean movement.
The arc of the blade is what lets it follow a curved bed. A rectangular spade cuts a straight chord across a curve, which is why hand cut curves so often look faceted.
It is the tool to use before laying any edging, and the tool to re cut an established lawn edge with each spring.
It ships in two parts, the handle and the head, to protect the blade in transit.
A half moon spade does one job and does it better than anything else in the shed.
The shape is the whole point. A curved blade rocks through turf and follows the line of a curved bed. A rectangular spade cuts a straight line every time you press it in, so a curve becomes a series of flat chords, which is exactly why hand cut curves often look faceted rather than smooth.
The step platform is the other half. Pressing a blade into dense turf by arm strength is slow and gives an uneven depth. Standing on it puts your whole body weight directly above the cutting edge and gives a consistent, deep cut every time.
Most people buy it as the first step of an edging project, then find it becomes an annual tool. One pass along the lawn edge each spring restores the line without touching the edging at all.
It comes in two parts for shipping so the blade arrives undamaged rather than having worked its way through the packaging.
Still deciding?
Not sure yet? That is fine.
You can change your mind. Under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 you have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, and a further 14 days to send it back in resaleable condition. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.
If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers you, we pay the return postage, and you can have a repair, a replacement or your money back. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Using a half moon spade

Why the shape matters
A half moon blade is curved for a reason that becomes obvious the first time you cut a curved bed with a normal spade.
A rectangular blade cuts a straight line every time you press it in. Around a curve, that gives you a series of short straight chords, and the finished edge looks faceted rather than smooth. The arc of a half moon blade follows the curve instead.
The step platform above the blade is the second half of the design. Pushing a blade into dense turf with your arms is slow and gives an inconsistent depth. Standing on it puts your entire body weight directly over the cutting edge.
Cutting a line
Mark the route with a hose and look at it from a distance before you cut anything.
Stand on the lawn side. Place the blade on the line, vertical, and step down. Lift, move along by most of a blade width, and repeat. Overlap slightly rather than leaving small uncut bridges.
On tight curves take smaller bites. On a straight run you can cover ground quickly.
When the line is cut, work back along it and lift out the cut strip of turf, leaving a clean vertical face on the bed side. That face is what your edging will sit against.
Timing
The day after rain is the ideal time. Dry summer ground is hard work: water the line the evening before and it cuts like it should.
Looking after it
Scrape the soil off after use, especially in clay, which sets like concrete on a blade left overnight.
Sharpen with a flat file when it stops slicing cleanly. Wipe the blade with oil before winter storage.

Half Moon Shovel (also called a half moon edger tool or half moon spade) sold by Lawn Edge Europe
at lawnedge.eu.com, at EUR 69. A heavy duty steel half moon blade with a push down step platform
on a long handle, used to cut a clean vertical line in turf before laying edging, and to re cut
established lawn edges each spring. The curved blade follows a curved bed, where a rectangular
spade cuts a straight chord and leaves a faceted curve; the step platform applies the user's body
weight directly above the cutting edge for a consistent depth. It ships in two parts, handle and
head, to protect the blade in transit. It is not a digging spade: the blade is shallow by design.
