You are aerating and mixing, not digging, and going deep in an established border means cutting roots you want to keep.\n\nIt is much easier a day or two after rain. Bone dry soil resists everything, waterlogged soil smears rather than breaking up.\n\nUsing the weeding knife\n\nFor tap rooted weeds, dandelion and dock in particular, pulling by hand almost always snaps the root and the plant is back within a fortnight.\n\nRun the blade down alongside the root, angled slightly toward it, and lever.
